Warhammer 40K: Leviathan Starter Box Explored

We got our hands on the new Leviathan Starter Box for Warhammer 40,000: 10th

We got our hands on the new Leviathan Starter Box for Warhammer 40,000: 10th Edition and it's a doozy! Time to go exploring.

Change is coming to Warhammer 40,000 and the herald of that change is the new Starter Box for 10th Edition — Leviathan! Featuring a ton of new sculpts for both Tyranids and Space Marines plus everything else you’ll need for 10th. But what exactly is in the box? That's what we are here to find out.

So GW has been showing off all the new models. So these shouldn't be a surprise. But let's go over them really quick.

Space Marines

All of these models are going to be push fit as well. They only go together one way so unless you want to do some semi-serious cutting and hobbying these models are pretty much set. I will say that assemblying them wasn't too bad. I do recommend snipping the pegs on them down just a bit or slicing the "pipe" part of the tubes. This will allow for the air to come out of the assembly and will create a better fit when you’re pushing them together. I would also recommend plastic glue at least for the major assemblies. If you do it right there's no way for these models to come undone.

What About The Extras?

Also in the box is a new Big Rule Book. It's almost 400 pages and within those pages are the "core rules" which are also re-numbered. That way you can get any copy of the rules (which you can download free here) and all the page numbers match up. I thought that was a nice touch. As for the rest of the book it's what you’d expect for a new edition's BRB. There's mountains of lore inside the covers, intros for every faction, a timeline that takes us up to the present of the game, and probably some secrets yet to be revealed…

There's also some very important cards for the Mission Deck as well as the Space Marine Transfer Sheet. Why no Tyranid transfers, GW?! (Mostly kidding. Mostly.)

The Mission Deck is going to be a key part of the game so you’re going to want to make sure you keep these handy. Additionally within the deck box are six new objective markers. These are the new "standard" objective markers. These are also going to be super important for pretty much all of your games of Warhammer 40,000: 10th Edition. I’m hoping we get acrylic versions at some point. Or, you know, use the ones you’ve probably been using for years at this point — whatever works for you!

This box is pretty hefty! There's a ton of stuff inside and the book is meaty. As far as launch boxes go this is exactly what you’re probably expecting from Games Workshop. I think the only thing that was a little confusing was the lack of datacards for the units. Technically there are rules for the models but those are in the assembly guides and they aren't that in depth. I’m a little surprised GW didn't have one of those mini-campaign books included so folks could use that as a "start here" book*. That said, when the box DOES hit stores GW has said all the rules and datasheets you’ll need will be available digitally on day one. So…Buy a box and make sure your internet is working!

We’re going to have lots more news and articles about the box and the new edition all next week. But for now just enjoy the freshness of Leviathan! Change is coming to the grimdark…

*According to GW:

"Then there are the Crusade Rules. These will be released as a separate supplement book later this year, but for now [the core rule book] is the place to find them. It's a comprehensive guide to campaigning in the Fourth Tyrannic War – including the story of the conflict, rules for building and developing your own Crusade army, and a full swathe of narrative missions and upgrades specific to the Tyrannic War."

So that's kinda what we looking for…Now we just need the datacards.
